Acid Mine Drainage

When acid mine water flows out of coal mines. As the water washes through the mines, chemical compounds that collected throughout mining processes create a dilute acid which then washes into nearby rivers and streams.

Coal Slurry

Coal slurry (also known as sludge), is the liquid waste generated by washing coal. It is typically disposed of at impoundments near coal mines. However, occasionally it is injected into underground mines. This only contributes to the spread of toxins. Pictured above is a large coal slurry located dangerously close to an elementary school.

Mine Dewatering

This is a process where groundwater is pumped out of a mine. As a result, the surrounding land becomes drier and erosion begins to alter the landscape.
